Rhean Warrior – Fantasy Character Design (No References Challenge)
This is a concept of a Rhean warrior from my original fantasy world, inspired by ancient history and myth.
Unlike my usual workflow, I decided to create this piece without using any references—a personal challenge to trust my skills and imagination.
The design draws loosely from Celtic and Germanic warriors, filtered through a fantasy lens. The warrior wears a leather linothorax, carries a round shield, and is armed with a seax and an axe—tools as much as weapons.
The focal point of the design is the helmet, inspired by gladiatorial murmillones, reimagined with a horned silhouette to reflect the savage and untamed nature of these forest-dwelling fighters.
In my world-building, each culture has its own approach to warfare, colors, equipment, and symbolism—similar to designing units for a strategy game. Rheans live in dense forests, constantly raiding their neighbors for cattle and resources. Their gear reflects this lifestyle: light, mobile, practical, and decorated with trophies from battle.
This was a quick sketch-based older concept, meant to capture a raw idea and push storytelling through design.
