Hello, everyone!
Here is the illustration of Athenian hoplite with phalanx formation I created on commission.
The commissioner provided me with specific details and even sketched out a preview of how he wanted the final piece to look. The artwork was a birthday gift for his friend, who participates in reenactments of ancient hoplites, and he also sent me photos of his friend in his armor as reference.
The commissioner requested a portrait of his friend wearing a painted Thracian helmet, with an Athenian phalanx in the background, set during the Peloponnesian War. The illustration also includes Chalcidian and Boeotian helmets, along with the symbols featured on the shields of his reenactment group.
The whole process took about 10 hours, which I truly enjoyed. But looking back, I feel that the illustration could have turned out even better if I hadn’t been in such a rush because of budged restrains.
I’ve worked on several historical illustrations and portraits before, but this project was a valuable learning experience. I’ve come to realize that time is valuable, and it’s important to focus on quality rather than rushing to meet deadlines. :)
